Unhappy No internet connection using Windows Vista

Hi,

We have 3 computers on a nice little home network-- all hardwired, working fine and life was good.... a week ago there was a lightning storm and my daughter left her computer on.... Since the storm, she cannot connect to the internet at all. The rest of us are having no problems whatsoever. I checked the router and cable and using a laptop, (connecting it in her room with her cable) made sure that there was no problem at that end, so the only thing I am certain that the problem resides in her computer. We use Roadrunner and its been working very well for us.

The computer is fairly new (7 months old) and uses Windows Vista, which I'm not so familiar with it.... At one point it show's "limited connectivity," but doesn't seem to recognize anything. I tried restoring her computer to a date prior to the storm and that didn't help at all. I tried all the "diagnostics" and "repair" options, but the computer also doesn't seen to see that it is connected at all.

It may be that the storm was just a coincidence of timing and had nothing to do with her loss of connectivity since there doesn't seem to be any other problems with it. Usually I can figure these things out, but short of reinstalling Windows, I don't know where to start on this.

Any help at all would be most appreciated!!

Hello Robbie,

It might be possible the lighting fried the Network connection.

try this.

click the windows icon > in search type in "CMD" > in dos pompt type in "Ipconfig /all" > if you see your internet connection there then good if you dont then dont worry.

Next type in "ipconfig /release" this will stop any connection you have.

next type in "ipconfig /renew" this will bring back the connection. it should repair if its a software problem.

lets us know if this doesnt work.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center

On the left side of the window, click on Diagnose and repair

I just tried your CMD suggestion, Joey - when I put in "Ipconfig /all" It showed that under "Ethernet Local Area Connection" "Media State - Media disabled." It also listed two other "Tunnel Adaptor Local Area Connections" and both also showed "Media Disabled. When I tried "pconfig /release" it told me that "The requested operation requires elevation." I have no clue what that means!

Gandalf, I tried the Diagnose and Repair route last night it wasn't able to find nor fix the problem.....

Thanks though--

A little more follow up:

When I did the Diagnose and Repair, it told me the following:

"An installed Layered Service Provider (LSP) is outdated." I have no idea what that means!

Secondly, here are the results of the Ipconfig /all

Thank you all for helping me with this!

Instead of "click the windows icon > " go to Start > Programs > Accessories

Right click on Command Prompt
Click on Run as administrator

Now try those commands joeyfine gave you.

I think this is what the "The requested operation requires elevation" meant... Administrative privileges.
