Smile [Answered] ip address problem/question

hello pc help forum people!
i'm an avid gamer and play quite a bit of cs. the thing is, that last year, that my ping was generally lower than it is now (and yes i've checked with default configs...).
im on AOL ( stupid parents wont change isp...) and for some reason whenever i check/trace my ip, it says that im in USA!!!
:S it is so weird, but on some websites and on the mcafee tracer thing it says that my ip is located in north england/west midlands.
my location is in east sussex (the most south easterly place it is possible to be at, (i live on the seafront, like i look out of window and there is the sea).
and i think that my ping is affected by the distance of the aol exchange/server location. but what is most weird is that my ping shows up as american....
my clan's server is in west kent/east surrey/south london (its really hard to pinpoint exact location) and i should be getting a ping of 10 and i get ~20. my max download speed is ~ 230kB/s(when i download files), i have no idea about upload speed. please tell me what is wrong with my internet/isp (yes i know aol is rubbish, but there may be other problems)

thanks in advance,

Led

Hello.Well you are with AOL that is a problem in its self and they cap downloads unless you go for a higher priced package.AOL states "upto" speed of broadband.

Do you usean AOL wireless router?Or did you install your own as AOL block our own bought routers?

Can you click this and choose your location and post results back here please.Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test

Ok your exchange is not just down the road lol.Yes the further you are from the exchange the slower your speed. The busier the internet the slower your speed.

Now if you pay for for example 2 meg BB with AOL you get upto that no garantee you will get that.Your upload speeds as for most ISP is greatly reduced you may usaly only get around 200kb,s if you are on 2 meg BB.

Let me know the results of your speed test please.

I have Virginmedia I have good speeds.I pay for 4 meg and I recive an average of 3947 kb/s my upload speed is only an average of 363 kb/s.My ping is usaly an average of 19 but depends on time of day.Could be less or a little higher.

Try turning off your modem for one minute and then reboot it.

Hi so I assume parents are paying for 2 meg BB?If they are thats looking darn good for AOL speeds and your upload is about right.

Your ping does seem a little higher but that can depend on the factors stated earlier.

yeh, the ping is really messed up, i get a ping of 19 on my clan server which is in south london/west surrey... strange, i think we got gold bb, and im on the little bt modem thing, not wireless (god knows what my ping would be then! hahah) when i connect to a neighbours wifi with 1/5 bar, i actually get better ping (but i dont use it like i do my broadband, just to check pings, and they let me :P). so i guess i'll have to persuade the folks to switch to something better

It seems pritty normal well Virginmedia is giving a free upgrade on BB.4 meg will become 10 meg and 10 meg will become 20 at no higher charge.

The ping can go up and down depends on servers/and a few other things so I would not worry to much.Try speed test late at night or early in the morning see if it changes a lot?
