Default router trouble

The other night I bought a new Linksys WRT160N and I cant seem to set it up. I am currently using a 54mbps netgear and it is working fine, but I wanted to up my speed to 108mbps. When I put in the installation disk everything goes well until the last step when it trys to connect with the router and it says "can't find the ethernet connection". I have tried multiple times and nothing seems to work. I noticed when I plug in all of the cables that a light doesn't show up for the channel. The installation guide tells me to plug a cable from the ethernet slot on the cpu to a channel slot, but this just doesnt seem to work. The only way which I can get it to show up, is when I take the cable from the modem and plug it into a channel input which then results in a channel lighting up, but then the internet is lost going to the router. I am so lost and confused and I've spent my whole morning trying to set this up and I'm going to go insane!!!! Anyone know what I'm doing wrong or have any advice? Thanks for your time

Please note its best to set up a router via a wired connection if your trying to set it up wirelessly chances are wireless is off in the router

if the above isnt the case and you are wired to the router follow on

Do you have N compliant wireless on your remote machine/s? if not you will not get the speed anyway.
So you have a cable modem or an ethernet DSL connection going to he wan port on the router and you get no connection via the lan connection and your pc?

Press windows key and R and type cmd
In the black box type ipconfig /all and hit enter
you should get a list of numbers
Look for the default gateway and make note of this number. If none exists then your pc isnt connecting to the router and this will need looking into
Type the default gateway number into a web browser and this should allow access to routers pages.

username will be admin, user or root and the password will be admin or password or any combination
Once in the pages you can manually set up the router without the cd

cool thanks =) hmmm I got my computer connected to the linksys router now but not sure if its working right. When I had installed the router on the computer upstairs (one with the modem), the installation never worked because it said it couldn't find the ethernet thing. But now for some reason all of my other devices is picking up the signal. Is this ok? Also, my signal strength is low and I'm not sure how I could fix this. Another thing I'm seeing is that I'm only getting 54mbps as you said above. I'm not quite sure why this is. On the computer I'm on now has a 108mbps usb adapter and since the router is 108mbps, shouldnt I receive that much? Sorry if some of these questions are obvious, I'm sort of new to all of this.

its possible the router is set to 54 go into the config how I explained and see if there are settings for this. Also it might take the lowest conenction and default to that ie if there is a G adapter in the senario it may force that

I finally installed my router the right way. I guess there was a setting messing it up. I now have great signal strength but am still running at 54 mbps. Im making progress woot! I then tried changing a setting from Mixed connection to a N-only connection, but then my whole connection went bad and I had to use my computer upstairs which is hardwired to change it back to mix. Was that the right spot for changing the speed?

yes I feel you need to leave it on mixed and purchase N adapters for all wireless connections to get that speed
