Default Intermittent problems with firefox

Hello, I'm hoping someone can help me. I've tried getting this problem resolved at the Mozilla Firefox forum, and a couple of other Tech help forums, but so far nothing has worked.

I've been having intermittent problems with firefox for about a month now. I'm often getting blank pages, or a page that says connection reset. It happens on any site whenever it wants to, and it's very annoying. The problems do not exist on Internet Explorer.

I have tried many different things such as, disabling IPv6, clearing the cache, deleting cookies, disable "scan all files" option in avast, etc. Nothing seems to solve the problem.

Here are some specs;

Windows XP

Firefox 2.0.0.14

Avast 4.8

Comodo Firewall 3.0.22.349

Hi,
I know it might sound a lot of work (it really isn't), but have you considered either uninstalling Firefox completely and re-installing it,

or

using System Restore to restore your system to a date prior to when the problems started?

The problems started to long ago for me to use system restore.

As for reinstalling it yes I'd be open to that, but before I would do that I'm wondering if anyone else had some suggestions or is possibly dealing with the same issue. I'd really like to find out what is causing this if possible.

Ok thats understandable.
Have you tried removing any add-ons one-by-one, restarting Firefox in between every removal?

There is a nice add-on called FEBE which will save a backup of your FF configuration in case of problems.
You could make a backup at every point for restoring afterwards.

Ok, I can try that. Thank You.

Do you think my firewall could be an issue? I installed this firewall a few months ago, was not having any conflict between comodo & firefox though. This problem started a month ago, so I'm tending to rule that out, but you never know.

It's worth disabling it for a few minutes and trying to use FF again, just to see, but it's pretty likely that if the firewall is affecting FF, it would affect IE6/7 too.
