Hi there,
What type of file are you trying to listen on the internet? Is it streaming media like a film or music?

Ok.
Presumably Windows sounds all work ok? eg: when starting up and shutting down Windows. Also, can you play music and video files which are actually resident on your computer?

Another thing to try:
Right-click the volume icon in your taskbar and selcting 'Open Volume Control'. If there is an 'AUX' volume slider, ensure 'Mute' is not checked and that the volume is up.

Also, have you checked that your Shockwave and Java are updated?

Shockwave Download / Update: Adobe Shockwave Download Center

Sun Java Download / update : Download Java software from Sun Microsystems

Worth a shot
even if they don't help, it's always good to be up to date
