Default Download Speeds...

Hello, I'm pretty rubbish with all the technical stuff to do with computers...
But wondering if anyone could help...
My internet connection is generally 7.1mb (i think i've put that right...)
I did one of those speed test things at Speedtest.net it said 3617 download... 214 upload
yet I did another one it said something like 1700 download

Anyway, the real problem is that download speeds are pretty much maximum at 5kb/s which I know isn't right because I used to have a set 2mb connection years ago and downloads were around 200kb/s then.. I have put up with this over the last few years because I hardly download but just wondering whether anyone knows what is happening??

Many Thanks

Default Re: Download Speeds...

There many variables involved with internet throughput.
If you have Broadband, then your throughput depends on how many people are accessing the internet in your Broadband area at the same time as you are. If you are the only one on line, then you have access to all 10 meg. If there are two of you, then you would have 5 meg to play with. ETC. This is oversimplified, but you get the idea.

You also have to take into account how many people are trying to access the same URL at the same time as you are trying to access it.

I hope this description help.

Speeds tests are a waste of time. The best way to test your speed is with a multi threaded download application and a good source. Install Download Accellorator Plushttp://www.speedbit.com/ (set it up to a high number of threads) and download a file using it from download.com Free Software Downloads and Software Reviews - Download.com this will then give you a good indication of what speed you can get.
