Default download/upload problem

My friend is having internet problem.. from what he tells me his internet works perfectly fine for basic/normal activities and hardly ever disconnects when doing so.. however if he tries to upload files for example videos to youtube or download torrents his internet cuts off after the process has been going for a bit and it happens EVERY time and he has to power cycle to get his net back on.. however he can send large files through IM with no problem (though it takes hours) So I find it a bit weird downloading torrent or uploading large files to youtube or other sites makes his net die before he can finish but he can transfer such files over IM just fine this cant be normal anyone have any idea what it may be and how to fix it?

Hello Antoine,

Please can you check PCHF Rules regarding torrents, please don't discuss these here.

As for the problem he is having with large files, I have seen many routers which have difficulty handling data which use up a large amount of bandwidth. Some routers tend to drop a connection if a packet of data is lost as a result of high bandwidth. This does not occur with certain routers such as Netgear. What router does he have?

Oh... no! it doesn't matter, same principle, they both handle data the same way. The only difference is that they router allows multiple users to share and connect via ethernet. I've not known anything to cause the exact symptoms that you described. I have seen this particular problem on sooo many PC's. People that use uTorrent in particular. Not having the same problem transferring data via IM would make sense, since the data is normally routed through a 3rd party server with a limited upload speed, and therefore, not all of the bandwidth is being taken up by uploading large amounts of data. What is the make and model of the modem? Was this the original router supplied by the ISP, and what ISP is he with? When the problem occurs, does he have to power down the modem or the PC, and has he tried visa versa (can be done by disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable if connected via USB)?

In the meantime it is important not make things any worse, when uploading to uTube, make sure that this is the only internet activity taking place. No going to other web sites, or running any other web based software (if he hasn't already realised) will help considerably, but won't actually resolve the issue.

You mean the Motorolla surfboard modem? Does the connection light on the modem switch off when his internet connection drops?

Right ok. I would still if possible find a router or modem, even if it's your own you can use to swap out his connection width, and see if he still has the same problem.

Otherwise, the next step will be to look at other possible causes to similar problems, starting by completing PCHF Prework, with both AVG and HijackThis logs.

Also, can you check his MTU settings in the registry:
- Go to Start, Run and type in regedit
- On the left hand side, navigate to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip\Parameters\
- On the right hand side you'll see MTU. Double click on this to change it's setting.
- For broadband it should be set to 1500. If it's set to 1400 change it to 1500, and if it's set to 1500, try setting it to 1400 to see if it helps.
- Reboot and test.
