Default [Answered] Random loss of WiFi connection.

Hello, since you guys were so helpful with my last problem I decieded to give you guys another go. Okay here it goes

I have a fairly new Belkin router (two-three years old). I used to run this PC wirelessly, but hardwired myself in about a year ago.

Around christmass I bought a Nintendo Wii. After picking a proper channel (11) the Wii found my WiFi. I had a strong signal and good connection for say three weeks to a month.

Then one day (about a month ago) out of nowhere I lost my connection. When attempting to reconnect I got an error message: No access point found please check your router and internet settings. I was swamped with work and personal life so I never bothered to tinker with it. The other day I purchased a new game and low and behold the internet worked fine again. I played the game a few hours. The next day, I played again a few more but at random I lost the connection again to the same error.

Once again I have a no access point error. I tried resetting the router to factory defaults, I reset the router, I attempted to enter my connection settings manually into the Wii. All to no avail. Both computers hardwired into the router work just fine. Could the router just be going bad?

What was the signal strength like when you bought the new game?

Has the router been moved at all?

Can you check the aerial at the back of the router, as these have a tendency to loosen.

Also, this may seem strange, but has any furniture in the house also been moved, that could cause the signal to weaken?

It's also possible to have a strong signal and still have poor quality connection, resulting in packet loss. Have a look around for any devices between the router and the Wii that could interfere with the router's signal quality.

It's also possible that the wireless component of the router is failing as you suggested.

The signal was fine. I played for about four hours in two days time and had no problems. No furniture was moved. No new items that could interfere were added. The only thing even close is a phone. and I ran my PC with the wifi for over two years same phone no problems and I checked. If is the wifi going bad no big deal i'll buy a new router

Quick question. Would a netgear 5 port switch work? If I ran my connection from downstairs router, up to the switch then into my computer and wii?

It would indeed SX. If it's possible to run a physical wired connection, then it's always the best way to connect to the internet, much much faster and secure.

A tip as well when your having connection problems between your device and router, is to "ping" it. From your PC, go to Start, Run and type in cmd. From the command window, type in ping followed by the IP address of your router. For example:

ping 192.168.0.1 -or-
ping 192.168.1.1

Add -t at the end for constant monitoring. You can sometimes determine if your having packet loss issues as well, since your response times will be slow and you may receive intermittent time out.

It is possible to run my Wii on a wired connection Via a LAN adapter, but I already have enough cables running up to the upstairs from the downstairs i'd like to just use a wired Ethernet switch with the connection coming via my router. I could just use the switch to hook to my PC and my Wii? I wouldn't need like any extra software/cards? just plug and play eh?
