There are two ways to achieve this:
You could use a USB wireless stick connected to your PC and set up an ad-hoc wireless connection, this is not a great solution however because it offers no authentication or encryption of any kind.
The second would be to buy a wireless router as you say. I'm assuming having a USB modem that you are on ADSL, if so you'd have to buy an ADSL router and your modem would no longer be used, this offers the best protection and is a more ideal solution however it may be a little more expensive.
