Default Why Does Resetting The Router Speed Up The Internet?

My uncle told me to try it once and it worked beautifully. I've done it regularly ever since, but I'd like to know why.
Unplugging the router, waiting twenty seconds ish, and then plugging it back in triples internet speeds for a while. Over the course of a week or so, it slows back down. What slows it down? Why does cycling the power speed it back up?
