Have you tested for the presence of viruses or spyware recently?

What version of Windows and IE are you running?

Excellent - then grab a coffee, make backups of your favourite files and have a good long read of this highly trusted source: Windows XP Home and Professional Service Pack 2 Service Configurations by Black Viper - you will be looking to turn off any unneccessary services that may be consuming precious RAM and CPU cycles.
