I have been experiencing frequent internet drops (every 30 seconds to few minutes) ever since I downloaded a new/updated antivirus software (pc-cillin antivirus). Prior to the updated software, I always had excellent/very good connections and never had any drops. Even now it either drops/no connection or is excellent/good. It is never low signal.
I am using a Belkin PreN network notebook card and a belkin pre-n router; windows xp platform. I’ve had the router and card for about 2 years with no problems until now. I have even experienced the same problem away from my home network, when on the road.
Thinking that it might be a firewall problem, I disabled the firewall on the laptop and the desktop (hardwired to my router). But I read that deselecting the IEEE 802.1x setting in the wireless card property settings might work. Does this seem right? And what about disabling the firewall. Is that the right thing to do?

Thank you. I look forward to hearing from some one. By the way, I deselected the IEEE 802.1x and did a firmware update and i am still experiencing the same problem. My connection dropped about three times in the process of creating this reply. This is so fustrating.

One more thing...when I diagnose the problem I get following windows diagnostic:
Network Adapter Diagnostic Network location detection info Using home Internet connection info Redirecting user to support call HTTP, HTTPS, FTP Diagnostic HTTP, HTTPS, FTP connectivity warn FTP (Passive): Error 12029 connecting to ftp.microsoft.com: A connection with the server could not be established info HTTP: Successfully connected to Microsoft Corporation. info HTTPS: Successfully connected to Microsoft Corporation. warn FTP (Active): Error 12029 connecting to ftp.microsoft.com: A connection with the server could not be established error Could not make an FTP connection So it tells me that i can connect to the internet but there is likely a firewall stopping me from getting to the FTP. Not sure what that's all about but any insight is appreciated. Thanks |
