Well that pritty much confirms it:

Here is Microsoft's article on 8E: "STOP 0x0000008e" error message during Windows XP setup

Quote:

•One or more of the random access memory (RAM) modules that are installed on your computer are faulty.

•The RAM configuration is incompatible with Windows XP.

21a can be caused by either hardware issues (RAM likely), or if Norton Goback is installed on the PC.

If you purchase new RAM, make sure you ask if this is OK first with them first, as most stores will not accept the memory back after the packaging has been opened. There are a few still around.

OK schp,

Can you give me more information on the following:
- Do you know if you have a Creative sound card installed in your PC?
- Do you have a HP Scanjet 5100c
- What make memory did you buy, have they been completely replaced and are they identical?
- And finally, are you able to get into Windows Safe Mode by pressing [F8] during startup?

Sorry to jump in here all of a sudden, but perhaps posting the make/model of the motherboard as well as the RAM might help, because from personal experience I know some motherboards are very picky about RAM voltage and whatnot.

- I don't know if it's a creative sound card. It does seem to be a part of the motherboard.

- I had an HP Scanjet 5100c years ago.

- About the RAM... I had 256mb of PC133 Spectek & 128mb of PC133 Kingston ValueRAM. I removed both and bought 256mb of PC133 Kingston ValueRAM today. The newly bought stick is all that is installed.

- I can no longer get into Windows Safe mode.

These are the last 2 errors gotten while trying to startup in Safe Mode:

0x00000050

0x000000BE
