Default [Resolved] Internet Only Works in Safe-Mode

Hey guys. I'm having a problem. My apartment complex provides my internet service as part of my rent. I believe it's a LAN connection. Earlier today my internet apparently went out. Although, under Control Panel --> Network Connections, it said I had a valid connection and I could release/renew my IP address, I could not connect to a website. Anytime I tried, it immediately said "server not found." I decided to try connecting to the internet in Safe Mode with Networking and low-and-behold it works without incident. Before my internet went out, the last thing I was doing was updating my Kaspersky AV with the newest product version and performing a system scan. Since correlation does not imply causation, I'm not really sure if Kaspersky is the cause or not. But I don't see how it could be. Any ideas? Thanks!

PS: I disabled Kaspersky and I still do not have internet access in Normal Mode. Below is a HiJackThis log of the processes and programs running in Normal Mode, if it helps.

Default Re: Internet Only Works in Safe-Mode

to the PCHF.

Since you were able to establish Internet connection in the Safe Mode, then suggest you do two things.

First, access the Properties of your C: drive.
Under Tools tab, click on the Error-checking Check Now... button
Place a check mark in both boxes. Click on the Start button.
You will have to reboot to complete the process.
This will confirm that your C: drive is functioning correctly.

Second, after the above, place the XP windows install CD in the drive.
Go to Start>Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt
Enter: sfc /scannow
Note: There is a space between the "c" and the "/".
This will confirm that the Windows System Files are intact.

Good Luck...

Thank you for your reply. I'm going to perform Step Two tomorrow because I want to head to bed, but I already had a problem with Step One. I selected Check Now under the Error-Checking heading and it completed Phase 1 and appeared to complete Phase 2 but at the end of Phase 2 it said something like "Windows could not finish checking the drive." That can't be good, huh?

Forget step two, if you can't complete step one.

I was afraid of that. If you can not do the error check, then you have a problem with the hard drive. I recommend you go into Safe Mode and save off all your personal data from your C: drive. IE favorites, Email, personal files.

Reformatting the C: drive should cause the computer to mark the bad sectors as bad and allow you to use the rest of the drive. You can then reinstall Windows.

How old is the hard drive? Is it under warranty? If it is old, you might want to consider replacing it. When a hard drive starts going bad, it will continue to get worse. As it gets worse and you have to reformat and reinstall Windows. Soon, Windows won't install anymore and you will have to buy a new Windows copy. It is cheaper just to buy a new hard drive now.

If you decide to keep your current drive, remember to backup your personal files and email frequently.

Good Luck...

Thanks for your response! The strange thing is that I was going to purchase a new computer tomorrow from Velocity Micro. My current PC is a Dell and it's 4 years old and no longer under warranty, though I've never had any potential hardware problems until yesterday. Yesterday I also received my external harddrive and I began to back up files and folders in preparation of my new PC. My question is: Do I have to erase those files and folders, boot into Safe Mode and then replace them back on the external harddrive, or are they okay now having been transfered over in Normal Mode? Aside from that I'll reinstall Windows for the time being. Thanks!

I'm glad to hear of your intended purchase of a new computer. Your backups are OK. Recommend you keep them on your external drive as backups and periodically update them. In other words, don't delete them after you copy them onto your new computer. The hard drive is the weakest link to a computer so don't trust them. For any really important things, backup to a CD.
