Default [Answered] Internet connection so slow

Hi, 3 days ago i asked to my ISP to install at my home the best connection possible (in my country Peru, the best connection is an ADSL and its commercial name is Speedy 2000, so it means i can download between 180 and 200 kbps normally). As soon as they told me that the connection is online i tested it like 3 days, and the maximum speed iīve obtained (today) is 70 kbps. Iīve checked with them by telephone all the settings of the modem (Zyxel Prestige 600 Series) and its seems to be alright. They told me that thereīs no problems at its servers, and they asked me to change the modem for a better one.

Right now im not using any firewalls, i have AVG both antivirus and antispyware, super antispyware and Tune Up Utilities 2007 too.

Another thing we need to take in mind is that in my country we dont use static Ipīs so every time we restart the modem we have another Ip (dynamic Ip).

I hope u guys can help me, thanks.

PS: If u need more details just ask me

First, recommend you put that firewall up.
Second, try this link - Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
See what speeds it tells you.

It's possible that what they told you is correct.
What is the make/model of your modem?

Results with SpeedTest linking with Miami (the best result):

Results with the speedtester of my ISP:

(obviously it has to be close to 2048 kbps).

Details of my connection:

Model of the modem: Zyxel Prestige 660R-T1

U recommend to put the firewall of windows or another one?

Hi.

There are many factors that can effect the data speeds on broadband and it seems as though you are indeed not getting what you are paying for. As your ISP have told you there is nothing wrong, ask them what modem they recommend (even get them to send you one to test) that way if the numbers still don't stack up, you can go back to them again...

2 points I would make;

1) If you are using ADSL filters, make sure you have them fitted to every phone socket in the house
2) I'm afraid I have never had much luck with Zyxel modems

I talked again with the ISP and one of the technicians told me that the DLink modems are better for these type of connection, ill try this modem tomorrow.

I´ve checked too the filters and i noticed that i have only one filter at the main telephone but not at my internet connection. I´ll ask for that too.

I have 2 more modems right now (of my last connection): Xavi 8821R and Arescom NDS1060HUE. Anybody knows everything about these modems?

*Update*: I tried with another modem, i dont remember the model but the speed changed so much, from 75 kbps of the Zyxel to 160-170 kbps. Obviously its a modem problem. I´ll try to change it asap.

But i dont understand something, why the direct downloads are so slow (in my case like 20 or 30 kbps) and when i put the same link on the flashget or the bitcomet the speed reaches 160-170 kbps?

Hi taker,

Speeds are dependant on many things. Modems, ISP and servers.
But then some genious invented the idea of Bit Torrents...Which doesn't download of servers. It downloads off other users. So now it depends on your modem, your ISP, their modem and their ISP...along with every other users modem and ISP you're downloading from.

Flashget is similar in the way it works.
Downloading off a single server, such as Microsoft.com will depend on how many "hops" your link has to make before it will get to the server, and then back again. There's not anything that can be done about the hops, but if you switch to the D-Link modem, then you'll definately be better off, as you've seen the improvements with the test.
