Hi all. could any one tell me what tools i need to increase Internet speed by combining dsl and cable Internet .Thanks

Hello Method,

You can't "combine" cable and DSL. If for whatever reason you got both cable and DSL at the same time, the only help that would have is you could have two different computers or networks with separate internet connections, so they wouldn't share the available bandwidth.

You can't combine cable and DSL to increase your total speed.

Thank you for your reply. How about having 2 internet connection of the same type (dsl or cable) Is it possible to combine them to increase internet speed. This question was raised in a tv program so i want to know if this is possible.

Method, I take back what I said. After your post, I surfed around the internet to find articles relating to your idea. I haven't found anything concrete yet, but it looks like there may be routers out there designed to combine broadband connections. Let me look a bit more and see if I can find some products I can refer you to.

Wow, this is pretty awesome. I'm either a total noober and this has been around a long time and I just never heard of it, or this is a pretty new technology.

Here is a D-Link router - D-Link DI-LB604 4-Port Load Balancing Router - with two WAN ports that does two things. It shares the internet connection to literally combine the available bandwidth. It also has connection failure response, which means, if one line fails, the other line will take over automatically to keep your connection up. I researched prices, that particular D-Link router is in the 100 dollar range.

If you want to do some more research on it, this technology is called Load Balancing. I did a search for "routers with 2 WAN ports" and came up with a fair number of links.

You really do learn something new everyday...

We used to do something similar in my old modem days Wadd... The software we used would split the packets. It was something much like p2p transfer protocol...Our only limit was com port alocation. Which meant 2 modems, three if you were lucky...

thanks waad. You give me good search terms. Do you think linksys makes such routers too. there is a router that can combine up to 7 internet connections together but not sure what company makes it. linksys or dlink ?
