Question [Answered] PC Black Out...Next?

Hi,

I faced a big problem a couple days ago and had to hired a guy in to get me up and going again...ofcourse I felt like a **** when he went accessed the problem and then asked me what was the problem and what did he need to fix? Sixty Five dollars for nothing?

Problem: Couple of days ago, I came home to work on the PC and all I could get was a black screen and after clicking a few keyboard strokes, I was able to see a repeat of the message: System Cannot Be Found
System Cannot Be Found
System Cannot Be Found...

I was so baffled because no matter what I tried all that would pop up was the above message! I cut the pc on then off unplugged/plugged and everything. For 2 days I settled for beleiving I was doomed until I phoned this pc guy.

He fixed the problem and then asked me what poblem was I having with the PC...I stated: I don't know what you did but I'm not anymore. He looked baffled and said okay I will clean and defrag things while I'm here for ya....that must have been the easiest job for him ever! I asked him what did he do...somehow he never managed to tell me. I am not wealthy by a long shot and living on a fixed budget....but my PC is my life . I have even thought about going to some trade school to learn how to do minor repairs....that is until I ran into this forum. I would have loved to have donated that price here...where there is ongoing support....

Now guys..should this happen again what should I do to get going? Or what/how should I get my system "found" so to speak?

How do I defrag and clean my own system?

How do you drop a donate off here?

Thanks.

Hello Bevel,

Welcome to the PCHF. For donations, please see the Donation link at the bottom of this message. Suggest you wait until next month when we will needed it. We are caught up with the bills for this month, but thank you for the offer.

As for defragging and cleaning your system, we first need to know what kind of computer and Operation System you have. Since you have joined our little home here, you were asked to describe your computer. That kind of information will always be needed to help you overcome a PC problem.

For now, please tell me what Operating System you have so someone can direct you to the defrag program as you requested.

While defragging will speed up the workings of your computer. It is not a mandatory task to perform.

It would be nice if your computer never needed our assistance, but should that event ever occur we will be here to assist you. One thing that is manditory in these days is to routinely do an AntiVirus check on your computer. Again, at the bottom of this message is a "Free AV Scan" link. Please feel free to use that link whenever you need it. Also, since we all have egos (who me, yes you), there is also a "Thanks" button at the bottom of each message. If you feel so inclined, feel free to press it to show your appreciation for a job well done. But, only if we earn it.

Good Computing...

Hi bevel,

Welcome to PCHF.

Is that the full exact message you received? (I seems similar to a few other messages, but this particular one I'm not familiar with).

A lot of PC problems can often be intermittent. Many times I've found myself attending a problem, and the problem has dissapeared before I could see what was going on. From the customer point of view, they may feel a little silly, and frustrated, but believe me, there is no need to be, as the tech can feel exactly the same way, not being able to do anything about the problem, as there is nothing there to diagnose at the time.

A fragmented disk does not generally cause severe problems, but the generally symptoms result in the PC reading/writing data slower than normal, or for disks that are deeply fragmented, can often find problems saving files, but not usually reading them. It could put the disk in a little more stress than normal. Windows has it's own tools for checking and defragmenting the disk, in My Computer, right click on Local Disk (c), and go to Properties. Under the Tools tab, click Check Now for whichever feature you would like to use. I would recommend checking the disk before defragmenting, and these can take a few hours to complete. It is also important not to use the PC whilst performing these tasks.

EDIT: Sorry Wabeard, didn't realise you already posted.

This is probably way off but possible. Did the message say:
" Invalid system disk Replace the disk, and then press any key"?

That's the only think that popped in my head, (floppy disk in disk drive).

That's probably not it but just a suggestion.
