Post [Answered] proxies - at work and on home wireless

just curious here..

at work, cant connect to the internet without logging on to the work proxies : its one of those configuration scripts eg:
http://proxyconfig.companyname.com/proxy.pac in the LAN settings area on IE. Does not have detect settings automatically selected.

At work cant use torrects, chat or any P2P applications either.

I take the same laptop home and connect to my home wireless network..
Can browse the internet without logging on to the proxies, torrents and P2P, chat applications etc work fine. Even streams music..
Don’t even need to turn the proxies off..

Questions now:
Does my wireless network not count as a LAN setting so the proxies don’t apply?
... And do I need to worry abt turning the work proxy.pac off before I use the laptop? So that non-work related broswing / downloads do not go thru the work proxy.. (even if I don’t logon to them?)
Or does my laptop use my wireless router / dsl modem settings in this case - which is a direct connection to the internet?

Hi felix,

Welcome to PCHF.

If your company is big enough to have a proxy server, then it would be big enough to filter traffic such as chat, but yes, proxies do not apply to a wireless network, so you don't need to worry about turing your proxy on or off, unless you decide to plug your laptop directly into your router, using an ethernet cable (local area connection).

No prob's.

Most work places do allow a limited amount of non-work related browsing. Mine certainly does but there are is an obvious line that shouldn't be crossed in any work place.

Will mark this one as answered.
