Internet Help - Cant connect to internet through router posted in the Web & Networking forums; just got a router in today...had some trouble logging on, so i set it up on another computer on the network and am able to get connected to the internet ...

Default Cant connect to internet through router

just got a router in today...had some trouble logging on, so i set it up on another computer on the network and am able to get connected to the internet on this computer...after doing this i went back to the machine i first tried to connect to and was able to log on to the router, but can figure out how to get connecte to the internet

both machines have automatically assigned ip addresses and both xp, using a netgear dg834 router

any help appreciated on this

What information have you entered into the router? You will need to enter your ISP username and password for a start. Once you have done that, you should be able to establish a connection to the 'net.

yes i have done that and cannot get access..one thing ive noticed is that under the section that displays the attached devices, the pc that can connect's name shows up, whereas the other pc which cannot connect has 'unknown' beside its ip add.

..but is is being assigned an IP address by the router huh? What are your current values for;
IP address
DNS
Gateway

You can use Start > run > cmd (enter) > ipconfig /all (enter) - to find out.

Can you do the following;

1) Start > run > cmd (enter) > ipconfig /flushdns (enter)
2) Open your IE browser: Tools > Internet Options > connections > Proxy settings > un-check any proxy address in there.
3) Check on the router for any type of restriction such as MAC address filtering - that could prevent you from connecting correctly.
4) Clean out your IE cache and cookies
