Default [Pending] IE - browser windows won't close

Running a Dell with XP.

I have a couple problems

1) I have a few browser window that have frozen and won't close, and don't show on the task menu as running applications. If I restart my pc they go away, i can movve them and minmize, but not close. If I get enough of these open -I get the critical stop chime and it won't open any more browsers. Any thoughts?

2) windows media player 10 - viewing some online videos, I get some videos that load properly, but I get a few that load but the coloring is off. I assume I missing some codex or other add'l media component, but I'm wary as to how to find the proper ones. Any suggestions?

thank you,

Mark

Hello cubsn7,

Welcome to PCHF.

The basic codec pack you should be using is: Codec Installation Packages for IT Professionals

Completely dependent on what type of movie file your trying to play, the discoloured ones may be a result of your overlay settings. What graphics card do your have?

Also, if you follow PCHF Prework on my signature, post a HJT log back here, we will get a member of security to check your PC for malware which maybe likely to be causing your IE problems.

Hello Mad,

Attached are the AVG Spyware and HJT log.

My video card is 256mb ATI radeon X1300Pro.

On the spayware - "the not a joke" - is a known program and is not malicious, the other detections actually are new, and weren't on the log from the day before.. go figure

Also of note - about a week ago I got and killed a Downloader.Zlob using HJT and smitfraudfix

thanks

Mark

In Control Panel, Display, Settings tab, Advanced button, you should find your overlay settings here. Depending on what version of the driver you have installed you should see something like this:

Did the codec's work for the rest of your video's?

I've transferred your log's to our good man Valis, who will hopefully check out your logs shortly.

Hello cubsn7 (and good morning, madmonkey ), and welcome to pchf…..nothing too serious in the logs, but some tidying up to do.

Open hijackthis, close all other browsers, and click on ‘run system scan only’. Place a check next to the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: My Web Search Bar BHO - {8EAB99C1-F9EC-4b64-A4BA-D9BCAE8779C2} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearchWB\bar\1.bin\W6BAR.DLL
O3 - Toolbar: WeatherBug Browser Bar - powered by MyWebSearch - {8EAB99C9-F9EC-4b64-A4BA-D9BCAE8779C2} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearchWB\bar\1.bin\W6BAR.DLL
O9 - Extra button: UltimateBet - {94148DB5-B42D-4915-95DA-2CBB4F7095BF} - C:\Program Files\UltimateBet\UltimateBet.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: UltimateBet - {94148DB5-B42D-4915-95DA-2CBB4F7095BF} - C:\Program Files\UltimateBet\UltimateBet.exe
O9 - Extra button: UltimateBet - {94148DB5-B42D-4915-95DA-2CBB4F7095BF} - C:\Program Files\UltimateBet\UltimateBet.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: UltimateBet - {94148DB5-B42D-4915-95DA-2CBB4F7095BF} - C:\Program Files\UltimateBet\UltimateBet.exe

Next, boot into safe mode, navigate to and remove the following folders/files:

C:\PROGRA~1\AWS
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearchWB

Reboot back into normal mode, and run another online scan, this one from Panda, as below:

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report
After that, reboot yet again, and post another hijackthis log AND the panda scan report, and let’s re-evaluate where we’re at.

Thanks!

v

Default Re: Non-closing browser

Okay Valis -

DONE - I followed your instructions on using HJT (I assumed you meant those files to be clicked as ignored)

DONE - ISafe mode delete requested files (AWS is weatherbug - should I not use this program?)

REJECTED - Panda scan wasn't running or timed out - I'll try again later

Observation - The issue with the non-clsoing window seems to be when I use the feature 'open in new window'

Once I run Panda I will repost HJT and Panda.

Question - What free spyware do you recommend? AVG is good but the freeware doesn't auto scan or auto update like their virus protection.
