Default DSL on ME

My nephews recently got DSL from AT&T, but they cant figure out how to set it up properly. They tried to contact AT&T for help but said that the OS was too old and they werent "allowed" to help with it. Sounds fishy to me but we cant get help from them. So much for technical support. Anyway, I was wondering if somebody could give me step by step instructions how to set up DSL on ME. Thanks for any help -Artie

Edit: my nephews are gonna by XP soon if I dont get a reply soon, and Id rather not have them spend 100 bucks on an OS when theyre fine with what they have. And I do know XP is better but they dont wanna change.

Hey hey! Welcome to PCHF

ME is a bit tricky because it's setup for 56k. It doesn't have anything pre-setup to nativaly run DSL (a always-on connection).

You'll need to get an ethernet card if the motherboard doesn't have a plug and if the cable going from the modem is ethernet (ditch the USB adapter, it'll only complicate matters).
Once you get a PCI adapater, plug it in (when computer is off), and once you boot up, insert the CD, install, and it should work. At least that's how it worked when I switched back to ME to play some old games. If not, let me know

ME the worst version of windows ever released you would be doing your self a favor if you change it to XP much better allways around! "OS was too old and they werent "allowed" to help with it. Sounds fishy " ISP maybe worries about your security. MS don't support it anymore.

Not really, Windows 98SE detects my DSL line by itself, I never have to install anything so I would assume ME could do the same. Then again, you can't assume anything with ME.
Another thing, try to avoid those ISP CDs whenever possible, all they do is install worthless software in my opinion.

thanks for all the info, unfortunately my nephews live an hour and a half a way from me, thats the reason theyre getting the net (cam, email, im, etc). As far as I know, they said they got everything hooked up (including the ethernet wire, which means they must have an ethernet card) from what the instructions said, but it wont work. Im thinking it has something to do with the OS. ie: when I got my Comcast service I had to do ipconfig to get it to work. plus, me and my nephews are dirt poor so we cant afford to get them a new OS.

I have Windows ME, it won't detect DSL, trust me
It kept asking me for the phone number and what to dial

You should get what their Ethernet adapter is, and see if there's an update for it or something. I'd have to load up ME to tell you more though, can't find my disk though
