Default Connection Problems - Can you help?

Hi fellow geeks!

Every 5-10 mins or so, my internet connection gets terminated and I have to keep switching off my modem's power and wait for it to re-connect. I know it's not congestion issues, as my wireless connection to my laptop from the same modem is fine (and the problem occurs all the time).

I'm presuming it's to do with my desktop connection settings?

When connected, I have 3 icons in 'network connections'. At the top appears an 'Internet Gateway' icon and below under the 'LAN or high-speed internet' section, I have 2 icons: One is something called a '1394 connection' and the other is 'Local area connection' (both enabled).

Hardware I'm using:

Intel D975XBX board using the Intel 82573E/82573L Gigabit Ethernet Controller
Netgear wireless router (connected via RJ-45 cable)

Any advice, greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Glenn

Hi neljan,

Welcome to PCHF.

When this happens, can you go to Start, Run, and type cmd. From the command window, try ipconfig /renew

Can you check your event logs to see if any problems are showing up here (Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer).

Finally, when you have this problem, check your network status at the time (Control Panel, Network Connections). Does your status of your "Local Area Connecton" appear as connected? If so, press [CTRL]+[ALT]+[DEL], Networking tab, and check your network utilization, what percentage is this showing?

Hey thanks for your time and thanks for welcoming me!

I'll keep you updated - ironically, it hasn't happened for about half an hour now so when it 'times-out' again, I'll see what the percentage is and get back to you.

I tried the ipconfig/ renew, but it timed out. Do I do that when the connection fails or something?

The event viewer, I'm not sure what to be looking at to be honest?

Glenn

It's gone again. It's driving me to alcohol!

Right, my tray icon has stopped flashing which is my gateway connection. My internet gateway connection icon shows as connected under network connections. When I right click the icon, and click on status, it shows connected but the time duration has frozen (16:56).

My LAN connection shows connected and the duration is still counting.

In event viewer, I see something under system called 'Dhcp' which had an error at 20:33 then two warnings at 20:54 and 21:01 (13 minutes ago) I also see 'e1express' warnings from earlier (19:02).

Tried ipconfig /renew with the following result:

'An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : Unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.'

Just noticed 'dhcp' in both errors...are we getting somewhere?

Hi nel,

From Event Viewer, were looking for anything that shows up as a warning or error in both the "Application" and "System" categories. When you see one, double click on it. I need to know the source, event id, and description.

Do the ipconfig /renew when your actually experiencing the problem. Also, take a look at the back of your PC, the socket that the ethernet cable from the router plugs into, there is normally a light that shows connectivity, is this still lit when you have this problem?
