Default Wireless Internet connection problem

Merry Christmas everybody!

Not so merry is my internet connection. I'm using an Orange Livebox (the router) for broadband and can connect to the internet through an ethernet cable with no problem. However when I disconnect the ethernet cable and use my Belkin wireless device I lose the ability to see any web pages, but yet I'm still connected to the internet ("excellent signal", "speed 100 kpbs" etc, "web page unavailable").

The PC is right next to the livebox/router with my wireless device. I'm also using Windows (XP SP2) to control the device rather than the software which didn't pick anything up.

I've also tried ringing Orange with no success, joining the Orange Problems forum with no success, and locating the Orange configuration pages from a laptop in the house (in order to get a static IP address to actually connect to the internet, which drops out if you select "automatically configure IP address). Also fiddled with Windows Zero Configuration without success.

Incidentally, the same thing happens if I try and access the internet from my sister's Dell Centrino laptop (wirelessly enabled), she can connect but can't see internet pages. Does that indicate that we're not being granted accesspermission? She has entered the WEP key without success.

Any ideas how to overcome this? Cheers!

Hi pagemaster5!

I apologize for the late reply. This is obviously a problem with wireless connectivity. Not being an orange customer myself i cannot give you complete guidance, but can you try turning off all wireless security and then try connecting (im sure it wont hurt, just for a minute).

Hi there upgrader764,

The livebox/router keeps displaying an error message suggesting that a firewall is turned on, but it definitley isn't ("Unable to connect to Livebox, please check that your firewall is disabled"). With regard to wireless security, I don't mind turning it off, but could I ask what I should be looking for, and where it is located?

(the PC is trying to run wirelessly through a Belkin USB device, the laptop is running on Intel Centrino....)
