Unhappy [Fixed] Browsers crash on some/most movies

Lately I have been unable to view many movies via browser. They begin to load and then the only error I get is that the browser has "encountered a problem and needs to close".

It happens in both IE and Firefox. Occasionally, if the website has the option to download the file, I can actually view it via divx player.

Today I discovered that I can't listen to my favorite radio station via browser either. The link in case this helps is http://www.99x.com

I have tried updating both browsers to the latest versions, and downloaded the divx codecs. My more technically savvy friends are telling me to reinstall windows, but I'd rather not if I don't have to.

I'm using XP sp2. I have never had any problem too big for my virus scanner and so I've never reinstalled the system; it's been running for probably 4 or 5 years strong. No problems at all other than this really annoying video issue.

I hope I haven't left out anything important.

Welcome to the forum.

Let's start by removing Internet Explorer and then adding back again. Do the following to achieve this:

Go to > Control Panel > Add remove programs > Add/remove Windows Components > un-tick Internet Explorer in the list (this will un-install IE) > click next and come out of that window. Then go back in and put a tick back next to Internet Explorer (this re-installs a clean copy). Click next and exit out of Control Panel.

Okay, I followed those instructions and went back to try 99x.com and another movie which had previously crashed. No change; both still make IE announce it needs to close.

I got it!

Your trick with IE didn't do anything, but after walking away for a few min I wondered whether WMP itself was in that add/remove components list -- and it is. Unchecking it, closing, opening and rechecking it has solved my issue.

Thanks!
