Well, it seems like it may be fixable. How do you feel about updating your bios? Also, what operating system do you have by the way?

i'm willing to try anything to get this running properly - i just lost the connection again and it said the lan had limited or zero connectivity - its getting worse i think. i am using windows xp pro

oh, just wanted to mention i do not have the windows disk anymore...in case thats needed..

should i download this file then? i wouldnt know anything about the bios version i have already so is the a sort of patch file?

Yes, it is a kind of "patch" file but it actually patches your bios chip (hardware). You MUST read the full instructions and follow it to the letter if you are going to attempt this...I can't stress that enough. This should fix your problem BUT if done wrong it can kill your PC.

ok, well i am just going to have to write down all the instruction details word for word and fingers crossed i dont screw it up. thanks for your help. i also checked the setup by hitting f1 like you said but no matter what i enabled or disabled it just said the same thing about the boot agent.

if i come back you'll know i got it right, if not......
