Default [FIXED] Unable to login to secure web pages

Hi All-

I just finished a thread sorting out malware probelms on my computer- so very happy to say it is all gone ! Thanks guys!

However, I am unable to login to any secure site. Yikes? :|!? Specifically I have tried My eBay, PayPal, and my online banking site.

When I attempt to login , either through a bookmark or through a link on a? home page I get a message saying "page cannot be displayed"

I never actually get to the login page.

Recently I was having trouble with slow page loading in ebay, so I went to the eBay community board to get help. There I found a fix posted by rockboss2000 (posted below).? I followed the fix and page loading did get much faster. However, a couple of days later I lost the ability to login. It may not be related, but it seems likely being that it was just after I did the fix.

I tried to reverse the fix by erasing all of the restricted sites and setting internet, local internet, trusted sites and restricted sites all back to defalt levels. In internet options I set? my security, privacy and advanced back to defalts as well ( one at a time).

Not quite sure where to go from here. Anyone have ideas on this? I woudl really apprecaite the help- eBay selling season is coming up fast for me and my family depends on the income.

:-)

The fix I used is below

The instructions below will still speed up page loads on category and search results pages... It will suppress many eBay errors that interfer with your daily activities here... It will have no adverse affects on any other site... The only possible interference you may experience will be if you try to sort a large search return by "Distance: nearest first"... Only the closest fifty50 items will display sorted (200 if you use advanced search).
Portions of the tweak will carry cross-site and not be restricted to the search results/browse category pages... Specifically the buffer overflow in some routers caused by omniture.com cookies will cease and the omniture.com related "SiteCatalyst Debugging" should disappear from your eBay pages.

FIRST, clear the browser's cache:
A. Click on "Tools" in the IE toolbar...
B. Scroll the drop-down menu to "Internet Options" and click...
C. The Internet Options dialog box pops up with the "General" tab on top...
D. Click "Delete Files"...
E. In the next pop-up put a check mark in the box for "Delete all off-line content" and click "OK"...
F. Once the cache purge is finished click "OK"

SECOND, stop the JavaScript downloads on the search results pages:
1. Click on the "Tools" button again in your toolbar.
2. Click on "Internet options" again in the dropdown.
3. Click on the "Security" tab in the pop-up window.
4. Click on the "Restricted sites" icon (red w/white dash).
5. Click on the "Sites..." button.
6. Add the following URLs one at a time... Clicking the "Add" button after each:

http://*.admarketplace.net
http://*.andale.com
http://ads.web.aol.com
http://ar.atwola.com
http://*.auctiva.com
http://*.doubleclick.com
http://ad.doubleclick.net
http://ebay.doubleclick.net
http://*.doubleclick.net
http://banners.ebay.com
http://bibo.ebay.com
http://include.ebay.com
http://include.ebaystatic.com
http://pics.ebaystatic.com
http://thumbs.ebaystatic.com
http://promo.ebay.com
http://*.ebaypromo.com
http://listings.ebay.com
http://*.listings.ebay.com? ? ?--> (SEE BELOW)
http://*.search-desc.ebay.com? ? ?--> (SEE BELOW)
http://*.search.ebay.com? ? ?--> (SEE BELOW)
http://search.ebay.com
http://search-desc.ebay.com
http://search.ebaymotors.com
http://search.stores.ebay.com
http://keyword.ebay.com
http://attr-search.ebay.com
http://www.ebay.com
http://srv.main.ebayrtm.com
http://*.esomniture.com
http://*.omniture.com
http://adfarm.mediaplex.com
http://altfarm.mediaplex.com
http://*.mediaplex.com
https://secureinclude.ebaystatic.com
https://securepics.ebaystatic.com
Don't use the asterisk (*) wildcard in these three3 URLs if you visit the Mature Audiences section of eBay. To visit eBay's Mature section, your browser must be able to accept a cookie from that category. You can still restrict other category browse and search results pages that you frequent by using the full URL... Examples:

http://books.listings.ebay.com
http://music.listings.ebay.com
http://pottery-glass.search-desc.ebay.com
http://jewelry.search-desc.ebay.com
http://collectibles.search.ebay.com
http://clothing.search.ebay.com
7. Click "OK" when finished...
8. You should be back to the "Security" tab... Double-check that you have remained in the "Restricted Sites" zone then CLICK "Custom Level"
9. Now adjust your browser settings in the "Restricted sites" zone to these levels:
Download signed ActiveX controls (Disable)
Download unsigned ActiveX controls (Disable)
Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe (Disable)
Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins (Disable)
Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting (Disable)
***There may be a cookies setting here if you are still using IE5.x***
File download (Disable)
Font download (Disable)
Java permissions (High safety)
Access data sources across domains (Disable)
Don't prompt for client certificate selection when... (Disable)
Drag and drop or copy and paste files (Enable)
Installation of desktop items (Disable)
Launching programs and files in an IFRAME (Disable)
Navigate sub-frames across different domains (Disable)
Software channel permissions (High safety)
Submit nonencrypted form data (Enable)
Userdata persistence (Disable)
Active scripting (Disable)
Allow paste operations via script (Disable)
Scripting of Java applets (Prompt)
Logon (Prompt for user name and password)
10. Click "OK"...
11. Click "OK" on the "Security" tab.
AND THIRD, turning off script debugging:
Z1. Click on the "Tools" button again in your toolbar.
Z2. Click on "Internet options" again in the dropdown.
Z3. Click on the "Advanced" tab in the pop-up window.
Z4. Under "Browsing" put a check-mark next to "Disable script debugging"...
Z5. Un-check "Display a notification about every script error"...
Z6. Click "Apply"...
Z7. Click "OK"...

NOW, eXit (close) all browser windows... Start a new browser session... Try surfing eBay again

:-D Hey Conversee,

Congrats on getting the rotton little monsters off of your PC!!

As to your left over difficulty, can we go over what your internet settings are currently? As well as what you are now running to protect your PC? That way we can make sure you stay protected, but can still get into the other sites you need to.

After reading that again I have nooo idea what this guy was thinking?? He had you disable pretty much everything in IE, and we re-enabled it in your last post...
How bout we get rid of IE and reisntall it??

1. While you are logged on as an administrator, click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the appropriate registry subkey, right-click the IsInstalled (REG_DWORD) value, and then click Modify.
To reinstall only the Internet Explorer 6 browser component on Windows XP, use the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
4. Change the value data from 1 to 0, and then click OK.
5. Quit Registry Editor, and then install Internet Explorer 6.

Then download Internet Explorer.. And you will be up and running

Hi tjnbarbour and merlin!

I have Norton Systemworks 2004 with the subscription to Norton Antivirus. I see now I need( I think) a subscription to the Internet Security as well. My personal firewall is on, but now I just looked in Norton internet security and it is saying security is off, but I never turned it off. Also saying Norton Avtivirus needs attention.

I also have all othe programs I downloaded in fixing the malware recently. That's it.

I don't truly understand what a firewall does, but I went into the firewall forum and looked at what other people were using. I downloaded Sygate firewall setup but have not opened it yet.

My ISP, SBC Yahoo, is supposed to have security stuff like pop-up blocker and email virus security. That is about as far as I know.

I will go and uninstall and reinstall IE.

As far as going into administrator- I have not done that before that I remember. I see what you mean when going into safe mode, I have the option of hitting the profile we use all the time or administrator. FYI- everyhting I did on the malware fix, and in trying to fix the login problem has been in the regular profile, not in administrator.

My 4 year old is having coniptions that I am on the computer , so I will have to come back to it in about and hour (after bedtime).

Thanks!

Patti

You dont have to go into safe mode to do that, if you are an admin and not a guest on your pc and you have given yourself full power to the pc you are an admin!!!

As for having 2 firewalls I would uninstall one of them!! Norton nbeing my choice to unistall :-) but if ya paid for it might as well use it.

What a firewall does is well in plain english keeps intruders from entering your pc. How I look at it is you have a house and well we know the "windows are the easiest to get in from :-D" so the firewall blocks those window's untill you give it permission to come in or go out!!

Aaahhh. Gotcha- thank you! Plain English is a GOOD thing today.

I just looked at my Norton internet security and it all says disabled and off! I have no idea how that happened , nad after playing with it a few minutes I can not figure out how to enable it all. It is not running any securoity right now- firewall, pop-up blocker, or anything. Biting fingernails time!

I woudl rather have whatever firewall is better and easier to use. Whichever that may be.

Ok, the munchkin is gettin gout of hand : - I've gotta come back in a little while.

Thanks! :-)

In my own opinion sygate is much easier and less of a resource hog!! But thats just me. You should be able to right click the icon in the taskbar and click enable norton internet security. But if not then you might have to reinstall it.

And kids I know how it is got 3 of em myself. All little  if ya ask me :-D
