They ARE all a bit and  depending on the day/hour/minute. :-D

OK- I am stuck on #3 in your instrucitons "locate the appropriate registry key"

In Registry editor on the left colum see folders:

users
local_ machine
current_user
classes_root
current_config

In the left column is:

AB Defalt Reg_sz (value not set)

Am I looking fro something that says IE?

or we can do it the much easier way??

1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.
2. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click install uninstall windows components/and put uncheck the box that has a little check mark in it right next to internet explorer and then click Add/Remove.

Hello!

So sorry to have been so long away. Unbelievable, but before you wrote that I should uninstall and reinstall IE, I found an icon on the grey bar at the bottom of the screen that when clicked on siad "Windows update ready to be installed". It said it was service pack 2. So, beings that I have never done any windows update, or really knew I needed to, I clicked OK (at the end of the malware fix, joe5 said keeping Windows up to date would help security. So...seemd like a good idea to do at teh time (famous last words :wink. Then I went to uninstall IE. I had no Idea the update would be so large or that is was so sticky to deal with. Then, I wanted to do the IE reinstall , so I clicked cancel on the service pack 2 about a third of the way through it thinking I could judt go back and do it later when I had free time.

Then, my computer was very, very mad . I had to unplug it from the wall, then my wireless optical mouse and keyboard did not work. Stuckville. Had to have a local tech come out and fix it- he just left.

He looked briefly at the login problem and thinks it may be due to Norton Internet security/systemworks. However I am unable to uninstall it as it says I do not have the authority to do so. It's all messed up. Can not even change it from the Administrator profile. So . not I will do the uninstall and re-install IE and contact Norton to see how to unstall it. I may scrap it all together and go woth something else.

Ever hear of AVG internet security? It is a free download I got from teh tech guy that was here. He put the setup on my desktop in case I want to scrap Norton and go a different way. If not, got nay other ideas on what good security would be?

I'll post back as soon as I finish the IE reinstall.

Again , sorry for the delay- I was stuck in offline land .

Hmm... I just looked at the download page at Microsoft for IE . It says the download is for IE6 Service pack 2 for windows XP. Did the new IE copem with it when the tech guy installed wirdows service pask 2 for me? I'm gonna be on the cautious side and hold off on the uninstall reinstall on IE untill I hear form you all that it is still what i need to do after the whole service pack 2 debacle. NO more random key punching for me , Lesson learned.

Hmmm.. wasn't a good idea to cancel the installation of sp2 at 1/3 , but I.E. should be updated when you installed sp2.

And have you also tried to uninstall norton logged on as administrator in safemode? You can also try to reinstall norton without uninstalling and see if that works.

EDIT: I just found SymNRT on symantecs website , give that a go.
