I don't know much about routers and network configuration but maybe this helps:

When using a router, there is no need to use any AOL software. It is only used with a dial-up connection.

If you have reset the router, then you will need to re-configure it to connect to your ISP. The details differ depending on which version of firmware you have on the router. The current version is V1.00B02T02.UK.20041126 - on earlier versions the menu and options are organised differently.

Connect to the router by Ethernet. I do not recommend that you do any configuring changes over a wireless connection. Since you have reset the router, enter 192.168.1.1 in the Internet Explorer address bar, and login using the default username/password of admin/admin.

Do you have a backup of your configuration? If so, it's simply a matter of restoring it via Tools | System | Load Settings From Local Hard Drive. If you don't have a backup, then you will need to re-enter your config from scratch [Aside: and this may remind you to take a backup once you have things working again ]

All that should be necessary is to enter the AOL login details. With the current firmware, this is done on the Home | WAN screen.
User Name = screenname@aol.com
Password = password

where screenname and password are your AOL screenname and password. Since you have setup the router previously, there should be no problem here (?).

That should be sufficient to get you started. Click Apply, then save the setting using Tools | System | Reboot.

If you have earlier firmware, enter the AOL login details on the Setup | Connection 1 screen. Save the settings via Tools | System Commands | Save All.

Check in Internet Explorer via Tools | Internet Options | Connections either that nothing is shown in the 'Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings' box, or that 'Never dial a connection' is selected. Click 'LAN settings' and check that nothing is selected.
