This gets 10/10 for driving me nuts but when I surf my Internet explorer shuts down on the hour every hour. I'll be surfing away and suddenly it pauses (I'll then look at the pc clock knowing whats coming) then after 10 seconds I get the Microsoft sutting down box thing that says "do you want to send to Microsoft"etc then it shuts down.

I've run AVG antivirus, Macafee free online virus check and Adaware and nothing changes.

I'd appreciate any advice or help on this.

Fistly, you may want to try and repair IE:

> From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
> Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
> Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
> In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
> In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
> Click the Search button.
> In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
> Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
> Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.


If that doesn't work then you can do the following (best to have an XP install cd handy)

Go to > Control Panel > Add remove programs > Add/remove Windows Components > un-tick Internet Explorer in the list (this will un-install IE) > click next and come out of that window. Then go back in and put a tick back next to Internet Explorer (this re-installs a clean copy). Click next and exit out of Control Panel.

And if that doesnt work get Firefox at www.mozilla.org :lol:

Thanks for the advice, the first solution didn't work and I have windows ME not XP. Any other thoughts? It is such an annoying problem !!!

Out of interest does this problem only happen in the internet is does it also happen when using other applications. (making sure it isn't overheating)

Have you run Windows Updates recently? If not might be worth trying.

Even though you have Windows ME you should still be able to try Hengis second suggestion but make sure you have your Windows ME disk handy:
