many thanks for the help but finally managed to fix this problem..

i had to run this Winsock Repair tool http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html to eventually fix the problem. I am still baffled as to what exactly could have caused this problem.

That's a great tool - and one I have used in the past.

Why not add it to the Downloads - Utilities section for others to use in the future
