Default Triple Boot XP, Vista and Ubutnu

Ok first you need these things:

- 2 Hard Disks
- Windows XP Install CD
- Windows Vista Install DVD
- Ubuntu CD (Burned?)
- OEM Master CD's (Optional)

Have your First Hard Disk installed as IDE Channel 1 Master or SATA Port 0. For the second Hard Disk Have it in IDE Channel 1 Slave or if you have an Optical Drive on that channel have it as IDE Channel 2 Master or SATA Port 1. Have both of these Hard Disks Blank.

To install Windows Vista get your Install DVD and insert it in your DVD Drive, Reboot and press F8 at POST screen to select Boot options. I would reccomend you install Vista to the SATA HDD (If you have one) as XP does not come with SATA drivers and will not detect SATA hard disk. Use the whole Hard Disk as the Vista partition for Vista.

Or

Use an OEM Master CD to install original configuration when PC left the factory.

Next Install Ubuntu to the IDE Slave or SATA Port 1 Hard Disk. At the partitioning stage select Manual Partitoining. Make sure all partitions are deleted from device sdb. You do not need to touch Device SDA as that has Vista installed onto it. Create an ext3 Journaling partition using half of the IDE Slave and take 5GB off that for a SWAP partition. Leave the rest of the Hard Disk Unpartitioned.

Then its time to install Win XP, boot from the install CD and install XP to the unpartitioned space formatted as NTFS.

You will notice that XP will not appear in the GRUB boot loader as GRUB was installed to the main hard disk so to do this, go into Ubuntu, open the terminal and type the following command:

Code:
gksu gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
it will ask for admin password to allow access to grub Config.

You need to change the menu.lst file to this:

Code:
# menu.lst - See: grub(8), info grub, update-grub(8)
# grub-install(8), grub-floppy(8),
# grub-md5-crypt, /usr/share/doc/grub
# and /usr/share/doc/grub-doc/.

## default num
# Set the default entry to the entry number NUM. Numbering starts from 0, and
# the entry number 0 is the default if the command is not used.
#
# You can specify 'saved' instead of a number. In this case, the default entry
# is the entry saved with the command 'savedefault'.
# WARNING: If you are using dmraid do not use 'savedefault' or your
# array will desync and will not let you boot your system.
default 0

Add the last paragraph of code to your menu.lst file and that should do it.
That now makes XP appear in the boot menu and you have your triple boot set up enjoy best of all 3
