Default Zonealarm (personal), installation and configuration

  1. Locate the downloaded file (zlsSetup_60_667_000.exe) where _60_667_000 is the version number so this might differ
  2. Select the preferred language->ok
  3. The following screen will appear (click on the image to enlarge), press 'next'
  4. When the registration screen appears, uncheck all boxes and, if you want to, enter a fake address to prevent being registered
  5. Press 'next' and read the license agreement carefully, when you agree, check the box next to 'I accept the terms of the preceding agreement' and choose 'install'
  6. Now wait a few seconds to minutes, depending on you configuration. Zonealarm Pro will now be installed
  7. When presented the survey screen, just click finish, unless you want to participate in the survey
  8. When asked if you want to start Zonealarm, choose yes
  9. Now you can choose whether you want to try ZoneAlarm Pro or start zoneAlarm Choose the ZoneAlarm pres 'next' and 'finish'
  10. The configuration wizard will start, press 'next' and 'next' and 'done'when you see the screen below (or a screen similar)
  11. Now choose 'ok' when asked to restart
  12. After restarting you get a screen where you can choose to play a video tutorial, this is strongly recommended to get acquainted with the program
  13. A ZA icon appears in the taskbar, this is zonealarm when there is network activity the icon will change to this the red bar showing outgoing and the green bar showing incoming traffic
  14. When starting a program that uses your connection a screen similar to the one below will appear. You can check the box next to 'Remember my setting'. This way Zonealarm will not asks your permission again when this program needs to connect. When the screen appears 'out of the blue' try to find out which application requested a connection, since a trojan can try to access the network. When unsure, Deny the program to connect. If it's a legitimate program you can always restore access.
  15. Now doubleclick the ZA-icon in the taskbar
  16. The overview tab, shows you, precisely, an overview of the settings. Goto the 'preferences' tab and check 'hide my ip-address when applicable' this way you'll 'anonymize' yourself before contacting Zonelabs.
  17. Now goto the 'firewall' menu and click on 'advanced'. Check 'lock hosts file' this will ensure no malicious programs can alter your windows hosts file and redirect your traffic
  18. Next, goto the 'program control' menu and the 'programs' tab. This will show you all defined rules for the programs. When you've made a mistake, or want to restrict a program, you can change it here
  19. Everything else is configured as it should be. One last thing, when someone tried to hack into your network goto the 'Alerts & Logs' menu and the tab 'Log Viewer'. Here you can see blocked network traffic. When sending a complaint to a ISP include the logfile which shows the hacking attempt.
