Default Sygate Installation and Configuration

The last one for today. Sorry for the really large image....
  1. Locate the downloaded file (pspf.exe) and doubleclick it
  2. After a few seconds The following screen will appear
  3. Now the license agreement will appear, read it carefully and, when you agree checkl the box next to 'I accept the license agreement' and press next. when you don't accept, cancel the installation
  4. You can choose where to install Syagte, and press 'next'. Use the default folder, unless you want to install sygate anywhere else. Press 'next' once again
  5. The installation will take a few seonds to minutes, depending on the configuration of your computer, so sit back and relax
  6. After installation choose 'yes' when asked to restart your computer. When you don't your computer will not be protected by sygate untill you restart
  7. After restarting a two screens wil popup, see below. The screen on the left is the registration screen. When you've purchased a license key, you can enter it here. when you want to purchase one, enter your data and when you want to continue the trial choose 'register later'. The screen on the left is a screen asking whether an application, windows explorer in this case, is allowed to communicate. When you want more info about an application trying to connect, press 'details'. This is a 'leraning' mode of Sygate,e verytime a program wants to connect it asks your permission and, when checking the 'remember my answer and don't ask again' Sygate remembers your setting
  8. For the first few hours to days after having installaed sygate screens similar to the one below will appear, these are all part of the learning process. When unsure, deny the application ( don't check 'remember my answer and don't ask again') and see what happens.
  9. A new icon has appeared in your taskbar the one with the two arrows is Sygate. Rightclick on the icon and select 'sygate firewall pro'
  10. The next screen will show a summary of active applications, network traffic and whether rules have been set for those applications. Notice the icons with a yellow question mark? This means sygate will ask you what to do when the program tries to connect
  11. Rightclick on one of the icons to allow or disallow access or to have sygate ask you what to do when the program tries to connect. You can also view detailled information about the application and connection/ports the application uses
  12. Since auto-update is enabled by default we don't need to check for a more recent version by selecting update. Lety's skip that one and go to the configuration. Go to tools->options
  13. In the first tab 'general' all options are set nicely, except for the last one. When you have kids you might consider password protecting Sygate, dot his by clicking 'set password'
  14. Now for the 'network neigboorhoud' tab. Those options are also configured as they should be, unless you have a home network and share files between computers. When that's the case, check 'allow others to share my files and printers'
  15. At the 'security' tab the settings are good, but not perfect. For maximum protection check all options except 'enable ip-spoofing'. When some websites render incorrectly, uncheck 'stealth mode browsing'
  16. All other tabs are configured as they should be so select 'ok'
  17. Now you can test your firewall by going to tools->test your firewall

Hi Btalman,

Really appreciate your work on this tutorial, however, I think if you take another look you will find that there may be too many screen shots, it can be confusing. Why don't you try using the hosting program, which will insert thumbnails that the user can click on for clarification. That way they can read the directions without so much distraction.

Thanks for being aware of the typos, big pet peeve of mine. :eyelashes

LGW
