Default Kerio firewall setup and configuration

Allright the last one I'll post for today, got me some studying to do
[IMG] [/IMG]
  1. Locate the downloaded file (kerio-kpf-4.2.2-911-win.exe) where 4.2.2etc is the version number so this might differ, and doubleclick it
  2. Select the preferred language (english/german)->ok
  3. The following screen will appear, press 'next' and 'next' once again.
  4. Now the license agreement will be presented, read it carefully and check the 'I accept' box if you agree and choose 'next'. When you don't cancel the installation
  5. Now you can choose which folder to install Kerio to, press next, or change the destination folder when preferred and press next afterwards
  6. Now it's time to choose whether you want to enable advanced or basic mode. If you only use your computer for emailing and surfing the web, basic will do. If you use P2P programs, update programs via the internet, play games online etc. Choose 'advanced'. Now, press next and 'install'
  7. After installation press 'finish'. You'll now be asked to restart, do as asked
  8. After rebooting you'll be confronted with a warning similar to this. Unfortunately it's not in english so here's the translation:
An application tries to cummunicate with an external computer. Decide if you want to allow or disallow this action.Translation of the text to english: Green bar: outgoing connection alert, trusted zone
Next to the checkbox: create a rule for this communication and don't ask again.
    Lowest: Allow, disallow, details
  9. Allright we want to allow this communication, since it's windows explorer accesing a local ip (127.0.0.1 is your own computer). Also check 'create rule and don't ask again'
  10. After confirming this you're going to be getting similar dialogs,e verytime you use an application. By creating rules you 'learn' the program which communication is safe and which isn't. This gives you total control over your connection. When unsure whether an application can be granted access, click the 'details' button or try searching/finding out, what program is trying to access the web.
  11. Now for the rest of the program. A new icon appeared in your taskbar, the blue shield when there's traffic the red bar will show incoming traffic and the green bar will show outgoing traffic
  12. Now rightclick on the icon in the taskbar and select 'configure' you'll get a screen similar to the one below
  13. Here you can see all current connections, which application uses what port(-s)
  14. I'll skip the statisctics tab since there's only a lot of nice erm... statistics. Now goto the 'preferences' tab and check if you like, especially nice when having kids, the password option and enter a master password.
  15. At the 'license' tab you can enter a registration key if you've bought the program
  16. Now goto 'Network Security' (on the left)
  17. Here you'll be presented a detailled list of the rules you've created. Made a mistake before? Correct it here by doubleclicking a application name and redefining the rule
  18. The 'trusted' and 'predefined' tabs are set nicely so now goto 'advanced'. If you're having problems and use ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) check the 'Enable gateway' box . When you're under constant attack from hackers and need proof, check 'enable logging of unopened ports'. This will create a log of connection attempts on closed ports
  19. Next, goto 'intrusions' 'on the left'
  20. All options are set nicely, except fot advanced under 'NIPS' Deny all priority intrusions, even the low ones for maximum safety
  21. Now for the final few tabs. Goto 'web' (on the left)
  22. You can block all kinds of scripting, but this will most likely give you more trouble then it will do good. If you want to check them all and a website is rendered faulty, uncheck the items and reload the page.
  23. Choosing the 'set' button you can add sites/domains which spread advertisements, this way those will be blocked and you can surf without those annoying flickering images.
  24. All other tabs are configured as they should be, so you're up and running. Press ok and save the changes.

Hi Btalman,

Same comments as on the other tutorials. They are really good, but hard to follow. Placing the screen shots as thumbnails will make it much easier to read.
