[Resolved] Can nobody help?
My machine has been running weird for the past few months. I have a Dell running XP with Office 2003 Pro and more. I use Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
The first thing I started noticing was that on occasion, my Firefox window would lose its navigation icons (to add a new tab, pint, back, forward, etc.), and you could not click in or type in the address field. So if I am doing research and have a dozen tabs open, I often come back some morning to find I cannot do anything other than use the tabs that are currently there. And there are 2 companies' pop-up ads that I can't seem to block (adconian is one, can't remember the other at the moment).
I'm also having lots of trouble with my machine hanging up. After boot or restart, almost every time now I can click on something on my desktop (file or program) and the hourglass will appear and then disappear, as if I never clicked on anything. Or it may not even give me the hourglass. It also ignores Ctrl-Alt-Delete, so I'm forced to just hit the button to kill the power. It has taken as many as 8 restarts before it will finally accept my command.
Today I tried to download and install the new free AVG 8.0 (been running 7.5). This began yet another round of nightmares, and now it won't completely uninstall, nor will it install or repair the install. It says it's not activated, but it won't let me activate it. I even did a System Restore back to about 2 months ago and tried to reinstall AVG 8.0 (loaded it to my husband's machine, copied it to a flash drive to put onto my machine). But now my computer is again hung up and it won't even acknowledge that I've plugged in the flash drive.
I'm going CRAZY! Can somebody help me, please? I'm assuming I have a hidden virus that protection software isn't catching, but I don't know how to fix this.
Thanks to anyone who can help!!!
