Now you'll have to excuse my lack of knowledge but I've made this thread in here because maybe it's my processor wearing out?

My rig is just over two years old:

AMD Athlon 64
3500+
2.21 GHz

1 Gig of ram (2 x 512)

80gb Hard Drive, 18gb of free space remaining.

I'd be very suprised if it were some sort of virus causing the slowdown. I scan 4 times a week with AVG and AVG Anti-Spyware, and I've just updated to the new AVG which has the Spyware scanner built in.

I also run regular scans with Ad-Aware and Registry Mechanic. And I run CCleaner each night before I switch off my system. It's a lot I know, I just like to have a clean PC to satisfy my OCD. : P
I defragged last night and it didn't seem to have any effect. Any help will be much appreciated.

Did this slowness start when you installed the new AVG 8?As I had to uninstall it a few people are experiencing AVG hogging or keeping there CPU stuck at 100%.

I have dual core and this should not of been the case with 4 gig RAM fitted.

You could do our prework just to be safe on the virus check?Its the prework link below in pink.

Now that you say it, the slow down has probably worsened since the installation of AVG 8. What should I do? Will they still release regular updates for AVG Anti-Spyware and AVG Anti Virus if I were to go back to them?

Uninstall AVG for now till it gets sorted.Or leave it but its ripping your CPU.
Spybot is still available from download.com.

I will move your thread to HJKLs for our security team to take a look for you.Let me get you a link for another virus scanner.

I've uninstalled AVG and got myself an alternative. Hope that HJT log is clean.

Is the computer a little better without AVG 8?

You may want to free up a little space on your hard drive before it gets to full.

I actually have noticed an improvement since uninstalling AVG 8. It's a shame as I always found AVG so reliable.

I am sure they will issue a patch or an update for AVG 8.So wait a little while and I am sure you can reinstall it.
