Default Another Curious RAID Problem

Hey chaps,

I have a similar problem to this, http://www.pchelpforum.com/hard-driv...d-problem.html hope you don't mind if I ask it here. Im also having hugely annoying RAID issues on an msi motherboard (770-c45).

Basically, in the BIOS under 'On-chip ATA Devices' there is an option marked 'Raid Mode' from which you can select either IDE, RAID or AHCI, as has been mentioned above. If you select IDE, everything is fine, but of course there is no RAID functionality. If you select RAID, there is the usual create array setup options, BUT with this mode set the BIOS no longer recognises any SATA drives (although the raid setup screen does). And niether does the computer- the non-Raided SATA drive that windows is on does not load, the acts like it has no drives (actually, the windows loading screen appears for a second, then the comp restarts).

Basically, the computer wont boot windows from a single sata drive unless IDE mode is selected in the BIOS. It seems like the onboard RAID allows for no raid, or ALL sata drives on raid, it doesnt seem to allow some on raid and some not.

CeltiExileOnline- can you just confirm that this isnt how it works with you? That when you have selected RAID mode, the comp still boots windows from the non-raid drive? Also, do your sata drives show up in the BIOS when raid mode is selected?

Thanks very much. Im also not impressed with the msi support on this. It mentions practically nothing on raid, and neither does AMD, who actually made the chipset!

Hi

"Through the years I have found this to solve most of the issues encountered during O/S installation, or when setting up a system."

Far be it from me to suggest such a "radical" approach in resolving an issue, on the MSI site I have found those links on RAID:

MSI Global ? Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Mainboard, Graphics and more
MSI Global ? Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Mainboard, Graphics and more
MSI Global ? Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Mainboard, Graphics and more

Now, allow me some rumbling:

The proliferation of RAID capable motherboards, has made this function available to everyone.

The weak point on this concept, is that, when things go wrong, users lack the background to "intuitively" solve those issues, and the indifference of H/W manufacturers has only complicated things, as they do not add a few lines of simple instructions for non-technically savvy customers.

If it is not made clear in the manual-you still have it don't you?-contact MSI as soon as possible, as they have an obligation towards their customers-as all H/W manufacturers do.

Hm well thanks very much. I am very surprised to find those FAQ pages on the msi website, I could have sworn that Id already checked that very section!

Anyways, I think I have found the answer. Basically, although the sata disks dont appear on the main bios screen when in raid mode, they DO appear in the 'boot sequence' section on bios, so thats fine.

And it seems that the reason windows is restarting immediately whenever the comp is booted in raid mode, is that it doesnt have the installed raid drivers. I will just install them, and it should be fine! Thanks very much!
