Default Major HDD Problems. Bugging me like crazy.

Hello Everyone.

Any help on this matter would be fantastic.

First of i brought a pc 2 years ago now cheap simple one from PC World.
Its not the best but it does me just fine. My problem is is that i am a bit of a horder, if i se a install that i like or might use one day i install it and likewise with my music movies etc.
Finally i ran out or my 160gb HDD abd looked at buying a new one. i Brought a Seagate Barracuda 7200 etc. HDD 500gb which would do me perfectly.

I came to installing it and found that both my sata drives were taken with old HDD and my DVD Drive. i went a brought a SATA controller which plugs into your pci ports.

This now gives me 2 more SATA Drives. I later installed my HDD and first it didnt work but later found out it was because it was unformatted.

Now my other problem is that i want to transfer alll my installs, windows, Files, Data etc onto my new 500gb drive and have that as my Primary drive and my 160gb as a secondary back up file drive. I open the bios to load my 500gb first and all that comes up is a line of letters and pictures and it goes no further. What im asking is How can i swap over everything so everytihng will load and everyting works straight away, installing everything again is a definate no no.

I am running Vista Home Premium 32bit. i do not have a boot disk as it came preinstalled and do not no where i can get one.

Any help would be great.

Sorry for the Essay but i thought as much information as poss would be the best bet in this situation.

Also I have not done anything with Bios as i am unable to do it due to lack of knowledge.

Thanks for the time reading

Just clone your 'C' drive to the new drive with something like HDClone. Then set the BIOS to boot from the new drive 1st.

Miray Software - HDClone - Hard disk copy, hard disk backup, hard disk rescue!

Complete hard disk recovery solution, backup, drive copy, clone and image computer software (Free Trial)

I have tried that but it keeps coming up with a error message saying
"Drives C: D: Could not be opened for exclusive read acess"

I Do not have anything else running in the background i do not think.

Shall i do it in safe mode or should i be able to do it on normal mode also should i disconnect and do it.

You can not just copy files over as it wont work you need to put the drive back so you boot your old drive with your new drive attached. You then need to use disk imaging software to copy the old drive to the new drive. Once that is done you can then set the new drive as the boot drive.
I assume you want free tools which can be found here

As you have bought a Seagate drive they do a free clone tool with all the instruction here

I use Acronis or MaxBlast (a freeware version of Acronis exclusively for Maxtor/Seagate drives). Once the process is initiated, in 'normal mode', the system reboots and clones the drive before completing the boot process. Never had a problem with the software.

Which program gave you the error message?
