Remember to click OK after typing devmgmt.msc into the Run box.

Then once in Device Manager

Click

Actions > Scan For Hardware Changes

Then, with a good drive you would expect it to be listed under Disk Drives once installed. It should also appear under My Computer.

Just to be sure:

When you click Start > Run and type in diskmgmt.msc and then click OK

Is the USB enclosed drive listed? What does it say?

Sounds like it may need to be formatting / the file system was corrupted.

You could try recovering using these softwares (don't format the drive til you've tried recovering the files):

Recuva - Download

PC Inspector

If none of those works then try formatting the drive by right clicking it in Disk Management and choosing Format. Note though that formatting will mean any data on the drive will be lost forever (unless you have a few hundred quid to spend on "professional" file recovery). But formatting should make the drive useable again.

What size hard drive do you have?

I think drives over 120GB or so require an exernal DC power connection.

Does your USB enclosure have an external power source or is it just USB powered? That could be the issue.

The clicking is bad. It means its having trouble seeking / finding data on the hard drive.

How long did you leave it in the freezer for? Try leaving it in for 24 hours (wrapped in a zip lock bag or plastic bag).

If the files are important then all I can recommend is Active File Recovery. Connect the hard drive then run the software. I used it to recover files off a hard drive which was clicking and not working just like yours.
