HDD making weird noise.

This morning my computer kept making a strange clicking sound which seemed to be coming from the hard drive. it sort of a clunk that happens when the hard drive isn't doing anything but it isn't that consistent. when i switch the computer off it stops doing it but it's random when it does it. it happened before about a year ago but it stopped doing it. my computer has been rattling but i think that is from the buttons. any ideas?

As you have already guessed, it doesn't look good..but let's see:

Does the system have a Floppy Drive? It can make things much easier.

If not, go here and follow the instructions to create a bootable USB stick.

Check your HDD's S.M.A.R.T. records:
Download the free program SMARTUDM - HDD S.M.A.R.T. Viewer, it is on the bottom of the page, scroll down to find it.

Put the program on the USB stick and boot from it.

After you boot your system from the floppy (or the USB), on the prompt type: smartudm
Select the HDD you want to see the S.M.A.R.T. records from, and keep pressing <ENTER> until the program asks you to press R to generate a report.
Generate the report and then do the same for the rest of the HDDs -if any.

In windows, open the report(s) with Notepad, save as .txt (makes viewing easier) and post them here.

it doesn't have a floppy drive and the HP USB Disk Format Tool needs a dos file system that i don't have.
