I bought a new hard disk. Brand new, still shrink-wrapped and all.
I followed the directions to install it, went through the windows installer, partitioned it, formatted it, installed windows XP (pro, SP1) up until the point where you need to restart and boot fro, the disk.
I am then greeted with the following.
This is the second (of the exact same drive) that I purchased that did this. When the first one did it, I thought that it must be faulty and exchanged it for this.
It's a 500GB Caviar SE EIDE hard disk. I may need to alter my BIOS a bit-- I'm giving it a 16-second wait. I can't find what I should set Multi-Sector transfers, PIO mode and Ultra DMA mode to. Currently, I am using my computer's auto settings.
I can browse the drive in the windows recovery console (from the XP boot disk). All of the windows data is there. I have tried using floppy and CD-based boot managers. It detects that it is an NTFS disk with windows installed. If I go to reinstall windows, even windows knows it's already been installed on it!
Edit: After digging through google, I managed to find the UDMA and PIO specs. Modes 2 and 4, respectively, just as my auto-setting thought.
Any ideas what may be wrong. (Note: It's formatted NTFS so DOS isn't much help, even though I do happen to have some NTFS DOS drivers.)
