That must have been what I did last time. That explains why I already have a knoppix boot disc.
I was pretty sure I did use Knoppix, but when I booted it up, I couldn't remeber how. Thanks so much!
And, do you know how to take it out of the enclosure? I purchased it already inside of one. I know it will void the warranty, but it's already past, so I don't much care.

The only other ideas I have at the moment would be to try a different usb cable or removing the drive from it's enclosure and installing it internally. If the power button's turning it on but not off maybe the internals of the enclosure are fried.
Edit: I see you already had that idea. |

I'm not completely sure how to take one apart but I would think a jewelers screwdriver and a little searching around the edges for clips would probably get you going, at least if it's anything like mine where there's no visible screws.

Hi
Similar issues with External Drives can be traced back to defective interface on the housing. This-unfortunately- can also corrupt data on the disk. If you manage to mount the disk, have a look here: Top 10 FREE Data Recovery Software Raymond.CC Blog

Did you know that before they got into computer hardware, Western Digital apparently made Chinese puzzle boxes? Once they got into hardware, they used leftover ones as HDD enclosures. It's true!
At any rate, I got partway done when I dected to try the Knoppix thing (later, when I can actually do the brain thing-- I'm too tired now). Thanks everyone-- It's people like you that make me wish I had the money to donate to here!

LOL. That's pretty interesting, and explains a lot.
