It could be a smart failure of the hard drive. Which reminds me when they call it a smart failure, they couldn't have come up with a better term. I had a drive that would report every sector as bad, but then would boot into windows and I would have not a single issue, until I rebooted and missed the skipping of CHKDSK which would then take 6 hours to complete just to tell me that every sector on the hard drive was indeed bad.
CHKDSK is suppose to do a check on free hard drive space, perhaps this is where I would start.
