Re: Help laptop not recognizing freecom hd anymore
21 hours is a bit long. Normally takes around 4-5 hours at the most. Did you see the disk blocks to the right hand side being scanned, and if any of those blocked contained data? These are colour coded.
For Windows to be able to read a disk, and to be able to explore the disk, it must understand every aspect of the disk:
[Hard Drive] [Partition] [File System] [Allocation Table] [Directory and File data]
-----------------------^
^ At the moment, Windows cannot even determine the file system (NTFS, FAT, FAT32) of the drive, and lists it as RAW. If it wasn't for your earlier connection issues and I didn't know better, I would have thought that the disk had been formatted by another device.
R-Studio doesn't care! It will scan every byte of information on the drive, and say hey.. here is a file, I can read and understand the header, and the rest of the data... I can retrieve it!
It's obviously more complex than this, but if your not getting this far, then as a last resort, I would try my first suggestion. Disconnect the HDD from the caddy, and connect it up internally as see how far you get. The chances of success at this point are not that good, but it's the only option you have left before sending the disk to a recover specialist and/or doing a RMA on the disk. At least with data recovery, most will only charge you for the information that can be recovered.
