Hey,
I am hoping someone can help me! A while ago, my Laptops hard drive crashed. I then brought a casing for the HD and turned it into an external HDD, however, when I plug it in to my PC's USB port, everything freezes. Windows seems to recognise it is there, but nothing shows up on My Computer and I can't get any access to it. I don't even care if I can't use it as an external disk drive, but I was hoping I could get some of the files off it. Is this possible? If someone could help me that'd be awesome.

It sounds to me like your disk is just too far gone. A very clear indicator that the hard drive is bad and unreadable is that it freezes the PC when you hook it into your USB port. I've seen that many times and have never seen a drive able to recover from it.

Unfortunately, short of sending it to a data recovery center for very very expensive data recovery, there isn't anything else you can really try. Except maybe trying another external enclosure. I doubt that will work for you.

Try booting into safe mode and seeing if the drive freezes up there. That's the first course of action to take. If that doesn't work, you can try another external enclosure...if you want. Otherwise, I'm afraid you gotta send it to a professional or send it to the dump.
