Default NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO (Click of death)

Can anything be done about this?

I have a 500 GB external HD that crapped out on me this morning...and I have a lot of stuff on it. I'm afraid to open it because as we all know, even breathing on an exposed HD will cause it to crash.

Can I have a tech fix this, perhaps?

A good local technician will be able to carefully remove the hard drive from the enclosure and connect it to a PC to extract the data....unless the hard drive itself is kaput.

Would this cost like...half a grand to do, or something? Frankly I'd rather just replace the armature/etc. myself, I think the drive is still usable.

If we are talking about a regular, healthy 3.5" HDD from a USB enclosure then I would charge around $50 for retrieval of information. If you are quoted much more than that then you will need to consider your options...

Do you think there's any possible way to save the drive itself? I know that the drive had an overheating episode two nights before it clicked (oh noes, I laid it on its side instead of upright, HOW CARELESS OF ME), so I'm not sure if the drive itself is damaged, but could it be just the armature?

That's not something I could answer without physically seeing the drive and something that you will need to speak to the repair tech about.

Is it worth it to have it checked out? I mean theoretically I might be able to buy another 500 GB HD for the same price as it would cost to fix this one, yes? The data I can't recover is a bunch of music that I GUESS I could just find again around dodgy Russian MP3 sites. 8[
