Default Computer not booting when HDD is plugged in

OS: Windows XP

Firstyle, whenever I plug in my second hard drive which has my game and music on, the computer will not bood. The screen stays blank and I can't even get into the bios. When I unplug it the computer will start normally.

My main HDD is currently set as my Master 0 and my CD Drive is set as my slave 0 (for some reason).

I want to set my main HDD as my primary and secondary master, and my gaming HDD as my primary and secondary slave. it use to be like this but now I have no idea why it isn't.

My HDD is a Maxter DiamondMax 21 320gb. The instructions on the back of the HDD and their official site are of no use.

Any help wouldbe appreciated.

Hello riddle and welcome to PC Help Forum.

Ok are these IDE or SATA drives?

And did you set jumpers on these drives to master or slave or cable select?

Jumpers little plastic connectors near power supply on the said hard drives/CD/DVD rom drives?

Also what is your cable setup?

If IDE do you have CD/DVD rom drive on same cable as hard drive? What postition are they connected?

Or SATA drives what ports are these connected to on mainboard?

Just need more information on your internal setup.

If jumpers are not set right there ends up a conflict and computer can not read boot order on wich hard drive/CD rom is master or slave hence proberly why you get no boot?

What have you setup in BIOS on boot order?

Not sure, I'm not great with hard ware. They're both identical and I use one for windows and the other to store files. I listed the name and make in my OP.

And did you set jumpers on these drives to master or slave or cable select?

The jumpers were both originally in the same place for each drive and worked fine, I messed about with some stuff on the inside and the bios and bit and messed my setup up. (Was trying to move the hard drives positions around inside)

Jumpers are on the HDDs.

Also what is your cable setup?

Not sure the name once again, sorry about this. They're both long greay leeds about 3 iunches with a rectangular end and that connects into the HDD.

If IDE do you have CD/DVD rom drive on same cable as hard drive? What postition are they connected?

I think I do, one is connected from the CD drive to the working HDD.

What have you setup in BIOS on boot order?

Need help with this, bios is at optimized defaults right now I think.
Sorry, I'm totally useless, if google the name of the HDD I listed you might get more answers from that than me :P

oK.

This is IDE cable:

This is a SATA cable:

Now wich connects your CD rom and wich connects your hard drives?

Please do not worry lets see what we can do for you.

Now below are jumper settings for a Maxtor DiamondMax 21 hard drive.

It shows jumper settings for slave and master and cable select.

Scroll down on this link:http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=379

At the very bottom it shows the jumper settings for your hard drives.

Can I just say that both the HDD's connect fine and have power etc. The problem I'm having is when I connected this one HDD (no matter what IDE or SATA cables I use, the computer screen stays completely blank. it's only when I remove the HDD that my computer boots. I'm not bothered about the CD drivers atm, or setting a slave/master just yet, I just want to be able to get the comp to run with this HDD connected.

I understood what you wanted to do.You need to set the hard drives as slave and master.

Remove any CD roms or DVD roms from the IDE cable.

Use one cable for CD/DVD roms as in IDE cable.

Then take a seprate IDE cable and do this:

Put one end of IDE cable into mainboard slot. Then attach slave hard drive to next connection closest to mainboard. Then connect main hard drive to last connection on the IDE lead. Then set jumpers on the hard drives to master and slave accordingly.

If they are not set to slave and master but set to both master they can conflict and your computer will not boot.

I wanted to know what sort of cable they use to connect to mainboard so I know what to tell you to set in BIOS/Setup.

The same idea or princible is used to set CD/DVD rom drives. If you have to disk drives fitted into your computer one would be set to slave drive and one would be set to master.

Another idea is if you have your hard drive and CD/DVD rom drive set on same IDE cable this can possible cause problems.

This is the reasons on why I asked how all your drives are setup.I need to know what cables are used for your hard drives and CD rom drives and which way you have set the jumpers.

I am unable to help solve this problem without the relivant information.
