Unhappy Can't format this Hard Drive.
Hello. Yesterday I got this 250 gigs Maxtor HD, IDE and new. Also I got an adapter to use it as an USB external drive. I wanna use it to backup some info from my PCs, but I can't format it. I get some error when I try to format it (I tried to do it with Partition Magic and with the windows tool. I'm using XP). I've pluged it to my PC with both the USB and the normal IDE, and there's no difference. Same error.

Any ideas?

Hello and welcome to PC help Forum.

What is the error you recieve?

Have you tried my computer then right click on this external drive and scroll to format?A warning pops up with all data will be lost just continue?

Yes, that's how I got the first error. I don't remember the exact error, but the system seems to try to format it (goes up to 84% more or less) and then "kablamo! An unexpected error while trying to perform the operation, cannot continue" (or something like that) appears. Same thing with PartitionMagic.

Also, thanks! I do feel welcome and I think I'll be here a lot from today, since I have a few machines to fix and not really much experience.

Let me look into this a mo,did you use quick format?

Try open up admin tools, computer management, then go to disk management you should see your other partition that is unallocated disk space you can format it NTFS or FAT from there..

Could you try and get the fuller error code please?Any numbers or letters with it?

Quick format fails instantly. Normal format fails after trying (80% or so, and that takes about 80 minutes). The error code? I don't recall.

Will try that as soon as I get home. Do I try it with the drive on USB or IDE?

Also, if anyone have other ideas please post them. I wanna have as many choices as possible when I start the new attempt.
