Red face Is it dead?

I know this isn't quite a hard drive problem, but it started when I was trying to install a new HD, feel free to move it somewhere else if you think it's in the wrong place mods/admin.
I oped my case and removed the old HD and plugged in a new blank one and turned the PC to install windows, all was going well at this point and once I'd installed windows I installed the udates and the shut the PC down. At this point the HD was plugged in, but just laying on the floor next to the PC so I put it in the rack and shut the case up.
Now the problem starts, I tried to turn my PC back on, but when I press the power button the fans start up, but nothing else happens, nothing on the monitor, and no beeps from the speaker like normal.
I opened the case again and checked I hadn't accidentally unpluged something, or knocked something, but I can't see anything unplugged/loose.

Any ideas guys?

P.S, although I'm not a total noob, I'm no expert so keep things simple if you could

It looks to me like either the motherboard has died or the powersupply has lost one but not all of its rails. First thing I would try is removing the cmos battery (the little button cell) with the pc unplugged and then try it with the battery out. If it does not boot then my pennies would be on a problem with the motherboard,You could try it without the hard drive to see if the machine posts

"but just laying on the floor next to the PC so I put it in the rack and shut the case up." was it on carpet carpet is bad for static may have done something. If you unplug the hard drive and try turn it on do you get beeps or display

Hi

First things first if your motherboard dies the fans would not start up.
Littleport2003 is all of the cables plugged in because that could be the problem
With the monitor but with the speakers I have no idea want is wrong with them.

That is not the case at all. Quite often the cpu fan spins the hard drives appear to run and the power is switched through the board but it could be a bulging cap or various other things that could be a dead Motherboard where fans still spin

No beeps from the speaker means the machine isnt passing its power on self test (post) it could need a reset it could possible be a killed hdd due to static thats why I also said in post 2 to try it without the hdd or ot could quite easily be the Motherboard
