A slave drive technically refers to IDE. IDE drives have a jumper at the back that allow you to switch between Master and Slave.
A Master drive is the first hard drive your system will look for, and will normally contain your operating system.
A Slave drive is your second additional/seperate hard drive. There are no real benefits except to give your PC extra storage.
You can do the same thing with SATA, although it is generally referred to as an additional storage device as apposed to a slave. This is because the order of which hard drives take priority is selected within your BIOS, and no longer a physical swapping cables and jumpers to get the hard drive you want to start first.
